This town lies in the Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester. Westhoughton was formerly a hub for coal mining, cotton-spinning and textile manufacture. Today it’s mainly residential, comprising several former villages, each with distinctive characters, traditions and amenities. Snydle water tower (est. 1914) is now a private dwelling visible from the M61. St Bartholomew's Church of England Primary School is a Grade II listed building; and there’s the red brick and terracotta town hall and Carnegie library. The M61 motorway shoots through town; the A58 and A6 cross it.
