This market town in Lancashire lies eight miles north of Wigan. Its wealth came principally from the cotton industry; in the ‘70s, the skyline was dominated by factory chimneys. The locality – verging Lancashire Coalfield – was also an important coal-mining district. During WWII, the town was home to the Royal Ordnance Factory, an important munitions manufacturer. Chorley is bisected by the A6 Roman road which runs through town. It’s also situated nearby the M61 and M6 motorways.
